Young Artist Donates Painting to C.A.R.E.

Artist Elmi Ventura Mata recently presented his original oil painting, “The People Tree”, to Community Action Reaches Everyone (C.A.R.E.), a non-profit organization.

In 2012, C.A.R.E. awarded Elmi a textbook grant as he began a BFA degree program at the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) in Ohio. On July 31, C.A.R.E. President, Mrs. Dora Ramos, and Board Members, Dr. Mary Reece and Ms. Virginia Pattie, accepted Elmi’s gift that will be displayed at the group’s Amboy Avenue office.

Born in El Salvador, Elmi is primarily a self-taught artist.  With the support of Mr. Reece, his long-time mentor, scholarships and other resources, he attended St. Mary of the Assumption High School where he graduated with high honors.

Prior to college, he earned summer scholarships at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and at Appel Farm Music and Arts Center in Elmer, NJ.  In 2012, he was selected by Young Audiences of New Jersey to pilot E.A.C.H. (Emerging Arts Creativity Hub), and he received a Governor’s Arts Award.  Currently, Elmi is a second-year Gund Scholar at CIA.

Mrs. Ramos noted Elmi’s success is what brings happiness and pride  to the C.A.R.E.  organization.

Crossroads Special Event

Edison, NJ - June 2013

Edison Township Board of Education, in conjunction with Community Action Reaches Everyone (C.A.R.E.), will honor students who participated in Crossroads, a peer mentorship program, at Washington School on June 3rd at 3:30 p.m. C.A.R.E. President, Dora Ramos, launched the program in partnership with Dr. Richard O'Malley, Superintendent of Edison Public Schools.

About Crossroads

Crossroads Club is designed to support the academic achievement of recently-exited ESL/Bilingual elementary students through cross-age peer mentoring. Every week, student mentors from Herbert Hoover and Thomas Jefferson Middle Schools team up with students at Washington Elementary School, grades 3-5, while club advisors, Fotini Kousoulis and Regina Paglia-Smoler, facilitate the activities. The club maintains a culturally-responsive environment that stimulates learning and helps students' emotional, social and cognitive development.

Reaching Out

Dora Ramos, founder of Community Action Reaches Everyone (CARE), and Dr. Richard O'Malley initiated Crossroads as an extension of the ESL Saturday Academy, a highly-successful program they created for ESL students and their families. Transitioning from ESL/Bilingual classes to the mainstream can be difficult for youngsters. Without the assistance of in-class support by ESL teachers, the children are overpowered by the demands of the curriculum as well as feeling socially secluded, battling with the abrupt move to full-time immersion. Knowing the complexities these children face motivated Mrs. Ramos and Dr. O'Malley to start this companion-coaching venue.

C.A.R.E. & AFV Teaches Edison High School Students Life Skills

C.A.R.E. & AFV Joint Venture Teaches Edison High School Students Life Skills

Edison, NJ - December 2012

A Fluent Vision, LLC (AFV), Edison Township Public Schools, and Community Action Reaches Everyone (C.A.R.E.) have announced a partnership and program designed to provide select high school students in Edison, NJ with a consultative sales skills-based curriculum.

"Everyone sells," remarked AFV Managing Partner Walter Santiago. "Whether it's a businessperson with a product, or a teen making a case as to why her parents should buy her a tablet computer, consultative sales skills have multiple applications in almost all areas of life."

With this philosophy in mind, AFV has tailored a curriculum called "Consultative TouchPoint: Life Skills." The course is customized from AFV's award-winning content that has for years helped worldwide IT channel organizations improve process and performance, maximize profits, and increase return on investment.

In addition to consultative sales skills, students develop abilities related to job seeking, including writing resumes, cover letters, interview and image preparation as well as etiquette. Students are provided with a tailored mentoring program called "Virtual Sales Mentor" to help reinforce what they learn in the course. The program is also working with organizations to assist students in securing employment as a result of this course. According to Gabriella Rubino-Tocci, AFV Director of Consultant Strategies, "Many organizations have expressed both a need for personnel with this skill set, and a readiness to hire qualified applicants from this program."

The first program began in October, with Mr. Santiago instructing, and will run through January. The course is a six session engagement, with students meeting once weekly. The partnership has plans to expand the reach of the program in the coming months.
